〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Joseph Joestar, no superhero name
CHARACTER AGE: 18
SERIES: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Part 2: Battle Tendency)
CHRONOLOGY: Manga chapter: 83/ Episode 18
CLASS: Hero, definitely.
HOUSING: Random!

BACKGROUND:

To start, here's a comprehensive history of Joseph's life here. The part I'll be taking him from is Part 2, where he's the main character. He plays a smaller roll in Part 3, and an even more minor roll in Part 4.

A brief intro before Joseph was born, since JoJo's is a canon that heavily relies on the generations/parts before it:

The story of the Joestar family is always a weird one. It starts with George Joestar, who was literally too nice to live, and thus died when Dio went crazy back in 1887. The story then continues with the rivalry of Jonathan Joestar and Dio Brando, eventually resulting in Dio and Jonathan's demise at the bottom of the ocean in a sunken ship. Dio winds up surviving due to being a vampire, but he doesn't appear during any of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part II: Battle Tendency. At the end of Part 1, Erina (Jonathan's wife, who is also pregnant with his child) is seen leaving the boat with another baby. That baby Erina saves grows up to be Elizabeth Joestar and is raised by a man named Straizo. The baby that Erina gives birth to grows up to be George Joestar II. Elizabeth and George II meet up again later in life and wind up getting married, thus giving birth to Joseph Joestar.

Joseph is told for most of his life that his mother and father died shortly after he was born in order to protect him from the truth. The truth being that Elizabeth had found out her husband had been murdered by a vampire. Although she succeeds in killing said vampire, she is now wanted for murder and had to flee to Italy, taking on the new name of Lisa Lisa.

In terms of the World Of JoJos, it's similar to that of our Earth... except there's vampires. Vampires literally ruin everything. To combat vampires, a type of martial arts called Hamon (or Ripple, depending on the translation) was developed. Because vampires are destroyed by the sun, Hamon uses one's breathing to harness the power of the sun (through some science bullshit?) to defeat vampires. Total science.

During Joseph's part of the manga, there are these beings found called Pillar Men. They are the ancient vampires that made the Mask that Dio found that turned him into a vampire, and for centuries have been locked away in these big pillars of stone, hence their name. But, because Nazis are stupid, the Nazis find these pillars and awaken the Pillar Men, who proceed to go on a rampage for the Red Stone of Aja to cure their vulnerability to sunlight. And normally Joseph probably wouldn't give a fuck, but they also kidnapped his "uncle" Speedwagon, so Joseph is like "time to save my dumb ass uncle."

Eventually this leads to Joseph needing to defeat all four Pillar Men, in order to save the world. Yeah, the world is in the hands of this asshole.

PERSONALITY:

Joseph Joestar is rude. That is pretty much his distinguishing feature amongst the JoJos of the canon. While Jonathan was a gentleman, kind and compassionate, Joseph is very much the opposite in many ways. He's hotheaded and confrontational, tending to pick fights and get into trouble more often than any other JoJo, past and future (seriously. He's arrested seven times throughout his life. jojo plz).

Joseph has always had a hair-trigger since an early age, as a flashback reveals when he is on a plane with Speedwagon that is being hijacked. For the most part, he couldn't care less, but once one of the hijackers hits him and stains a shirt his grandmother gave him, he flips out, knocks the pilot unconscious, and then has himself, Speedwagon, and the pilot jump out of the plane using only chairs as the plane crashes in the distance. Jojo plz. At that point, Speedwagon accuses him of never thinking things through, to which he claims he does think, but only just enough to save himself and his family (i.e. Erina and Speedwagon, since he believes both his parents are dead). This is a pretty good glimpse into Joseph's personality and thought process because in those moments, his thoughts aren't to directly confront the armed hijackers, but to bet that they aren't educated in how to land a plane. He uses that as the main part of his plan, using the ensuing panic of the hijackers as they try to save the plane to escape with Speedwagon unharmed (physically, at least).

Another key part of that flashback that also shows up in later scenes with Joseph is that for the most part, he doesn't start a fight until something has thrown itself into his path first. Be it a hijacker, police officer, mafia man, or cab driver, they all wind up crossing Joseph's path first, somehow thinking he'll be some kind of pushover. Joseph also always gives whoever is provoking him a chance to leave him alone, but should they persist... well. He may have to kick their ass.

Despite being the huge bara buff guy he is, Joseph is the JoJo who relies more on his intelligence and ability to trick his opponent than with his fists. Most of his more intense fights were based around his ability to first distract his opponent or otherwise mislead them, and then to use that diversion to hide his true attack. An example of this is when he is his final fight with Wamuu, when things are at their most dire, Joseph first tosses a bottle of oil at Wamuu, who's ability is to suck in the air around him through these weird wind tubes. Wamuu breaks the bottle of oil, to which Joseph acts surprised and upset. Joseph then throws a flaming piece of cloth, with Wamuu then shreds in the air. Joseph again acts surprised and upset, but it is only after he sees that Wamuu's wind tubes have sucked in both the oil and fire that he reveals his plan was for Wamuu to intentionally destroy both, so that he would take in both the oil and fire to cause an even greater fire within him, thus winning him the fight.

Thinking on his feet is what Joseph does best, really. He doesn't plan as much as he has a situation and runs with it, leading to him usually using an series of unconventional weapons or methods during his fights. Objects he's used in a fight range from a coke bottle, a coat rack, a pair of shotglasses, a pigeon, a pair of clacker toys, and etc.

Along the same lines of Joseph using misdirection, JoJo is also a bit of a joker. In tense situations, he tends to joke or be stupid on purpose for the sake of trying to lighten the mood, or to again, mislead from what he's really thinking. He'll play dumb on purpose a lot, as per a lesson he learned from his favorite book, The Art of War by Sun Tzu, who writes that "all warfare is based on deception." The ideas of Tzu, who says that "if your opponent is stronger than you, dodge them. If your opponent is calm, irritate them. Pretend to be weak, and they will grow arrogant." Joseph makes a point of saying that while he might not have paid attention to his classes or be well read, he has the words of Sun Tzu memorized. He also thinks it's a kick in the pants to be an annoying asshole to people, so. There's that.

The team "lazy genius" is an apt term to use to refer to Joseph. He's brilliant in that he is extremely observant and can use his environment to his benefit, as well as his ability to read people. But he's lazy in that he hates doing anything he doesn't want to do, even with something he knows will help him save his life if it requires hard work. In example, after having two of the Pillar Men place rings of poison around his heart and throat, he is told by that he will need to train extremely hard for 26 days in order to be able to later defeat the Pillar Men and get the rings of poison removed. He does it... but not without whining and bitching pretty much the whole time.

Aside from all that, Joseph is a pretty average eighteen year old. Irresponsible to a degree... a very... large degree, actually, considering he shoots up a coffee shop in order to try and kill a vampire, with absolutely no regard for anyone inside. Luckily no one was hurt, but... damn, son. Comic books aren't much of a thing yet in the time period he's from, but as it shows when he is older in Part 3, he absolutely loves comic books with superheroes, and his walkman, which plays both classic rock and... Weird Al. He loves Weird Al. Don't ask. The point is he's pretty much always a nerd.

Jojo, despite what he may act or say sometimes, can't seem to escape the Joestar's genetic inclination to be heroic and a good guy. An instance of this is when a reporter has been kidnapped by a vampire, and used as a means of trying to bait Joseph into fighting him. Joseph replies with saying she's ugly and he wouldn't rescue her even if she was his girlfriend. The vampire, having known Jonathan Joestar, knows that Joseph doesn't actually feel that way (due to those heroic genetics) and continues to threaten the the reporter. Joseph knows he can't deny the impulse to save her, and despite being entirely unprepared for the fight agrees to take him on. There are other times as well when Joseph can't hide how much he cares for other people, like in reaction to the death of Caesar. Caesar, for a good part of their time together, he wound up butting heads with due to their different ideologies but overall would consider a good friend and partner. It isn't until after Caesar is killed, do we see how close Joseph was to Caesar by how much he cried (like I'm talking full page spread of tears here). From that point on, he wears Caesar's headband as a sign of mourning until he uses it to defeat Wamuu.

All in all, Joseph is a man who knows himself very well. He knows his limits, and when it's smarter to talk or run rather than fight. He knows when he's outmatched, and when it's a good idea to laugh than show fear. It's also probably for this reason he's one of the longest living characters in the series.

POWER:

First I should explain, Hamon (also known as Ripple) is, as described on the JoJo wiki, "an ancient form of martial arts" that "through self-controlled respiration, one can link a trained person with the energy of the Sun." Therefore using Hamon, one can basically access the power of the sun's rays and redirect the energy from the sun into offensive, defensive, and even restoration abilities. The main purpose of Hamon in Part 1 and Part 2 of the manga is to fight Vampires and other darkness-based enemies. Because it's the sun's power essentially, it is extremely effective against those with weaknesses to the sun, and to light. If one's control of their Hamon is powerful enough, it can begin to mimic the sun's rays to the point of being able to melt flesh off skin. One's own Hamon, however, cannot be used against them because it is their own energy. Unless they are also a vampire or something, but Joseph isn't, so moving on.

Second, Hamon is Absolute Bullshit in what it can do. It is basically an "I can do anything" power, much like what Goku from Dragonball Z can do, and Superman from DC comics. So keep in mind that Hamon can do pretty much everything to a certain extent, and if the user is powerful enough. That said, the main weaknesses a Hamon user would have is if they are unable to use their Hamon due to either being unable to breathe (being choked, no air in the immediate environment), or having too low a body temperature (since the
ability is based off the sun and all).

The main ways to use Hamon are to: one, to use it offensively by itself and its user; or two, use Hamon to charge an object, so that it can become more powerful. Hamon power, once built up, can also transfer from Hamon users to one another. certain substances like liquids (water, oil, wine, crushed up beetle shells???) conduct Hamon better than others, which tend to magnify Hamon power, or allow better control of it.

In canon, Joseph's abilities with Hamon include:

- Infusing Hamon into various parts of his body (his arm, his hair) in order to either strengthen them (like strengthening his hair to become hard enough to block bullets???) or lengthen them (like extending his arm to be able to punch someone at a longer distance). Like I said, bullshit.

- Infusing Hamon into objects (such as glass, weapons, Hermit Purple which I will get to). The most common use of Hamon infusion by Joseph besides Hermit Purple is into a pair of Clackers. When the clackers are infused with Hamon, Joseph uses them essentially like a flail, and can fling them at the enemy. He can also chuck them like a boomerang, as long as one of the balls of the clackers hits a wall correctly, enough to bounce back to him.

This doesn't prevent them from looking like the stupidest weapon ever though.

- Overdrive, which is essentially, a big blast of Hamon energy, which again can be used offensively, or defensively. Offensively, it's obvious, it's basically just a charge up for a punch or hit. Defensively, it can be used to block an attack or destroy parasites like Dio's weirdo fleshbud things.

SO THAT'S HAMON, BUT UNFORTUNATELY, NOT THE END OF JOJO'S BIZARRE SUPERPOWERS.

In Part 3, Joseph returns (although as an older man rather than 18 year old) with a new ability called a Stand. Stands are a type of mental and spiritual energy, but with more specific traits and appearances than Hamon. They embody a person's will and personality in ways that Hamon can't, but also require more control and personal strength than Hamon. Their purpose is to defend and protect their user, but some also have the capacity to attack. However, there's a catch. When a Stand takes damage from an attack by another Stand, the user receives the damage. Stands can also only be seen by other Stand users, or those with strong psychic abilities.

The Stand Type that Older Joseph has (as Part 2 Joseph doesn't have his Stand) is called Hermit Purple, to go with the theme of Part 3 Stands having names that go along with the Tarot cards. His is the only Stand that doesn't have a humanoid appearance, and only takes the form of purple thorned vines.

Hermit Purple has absolutely no strength, defense, or power benefit. It's literally the most useless Stand for what Stands are supposed to be. It does however have a few abilities that no other stand has, namely telepathic-like abilities. Oh, and it can also be used like a grappling hook or whip, because it's vines. Magic purple vines. He mainly uses it in canon to escape, rather than offensively, probably because it is still a weakass Stand. The two main abilities of Hermit Purple are Psychic Visions, and Hamon Transmission.

-The Psychic visions allow Joseph to use a camera to psychically focus on a target, and the camera will produce a photo of them, be it a person, place, or thing. This can give clues to the target's location, or state of being. Joseph, however, is not that smart and thinks he needs to destroy said camera in order to make it work. He doesn't.

-The Psychic Visions also allows him to use a television to produce live footage of his target, or to receive psychic audio, which is the television channels changing very fast so that the audio produces a message. Luckily, Old Joseph figured out he did not need to go around punching televisions. Younger Joseph will not be this wise.

-Hamon Transmission is essentially, Joseph using Hermit Purple as an extension of his body, and then infusing Hamon into his Stand. An instance of this, for example, is if he wrapped his own body in Hermit Purple, and then infused Hamon into the Stand. This would prevent vampire-like beings from touching him.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, THE DUMBEST POWER. VERBAL PREDICTION.

Joseph does a thing in canon where he says "And next you'll say..." or "You're going to say next..." followed by the line the person he's speaking to saying the same line after him. Is this psychic power? Is this Shounen Manga magic?

Possibly both.

Point is, that's his third power.

Predicting what people say before they say it, then saying it out loud, and then the person in question saying that exact line despite knowing he said it first. The person in question will be completely unable to stop themself from saying the line in question, which can be used by Joseph to just be an overconfident brat, or a complete asshole. of course, I'll talk to the muns in mind before he uses it on their character.

So Joseph's powers include:

- Hamon (infusion, and overdrive), also gaining the weaknesses that come along with it.
- Hermit Purple.
- Verbal Prediction.
